Barbie White, the founder of Japanese Weekend Nursing and Maternity (JW), moved to San Francisco in the mid-1970s after majoring in dance at the University of Oregon. When she wasn't busy choreographing for Oblong Rhonda, her urban modern dance company, White began designing clothes that broke the mold of traditional maternity styles. She named her brand Japanese Weekend after a dance performance that she put on in the '70s, and she began manufacturing clothes for the mass market in 1982.
As the company has grown over the last three decades, White has constantly strived to produce comfortable, fashion-forward designs that allow women to love the experience of pregnancy and the early days of being new moms. As the chief designer, White uses her dance background to create clothes that complement movement and are built for a changing body. All of Japanese Weekend's styles are contemporary and functional. They are made from the highest quality fabrics and guarantee solid construction, so they are built to last for the length of your pregnancy and beyond. The company tries to keep the bulk of its manufacturing and production local to the cities of San Francisco and Oakland, and it uses fabrics from California whenever possible.

Japanese Weekend strives to create products that will make you feel beautiful inside and out while you're pregnant and right after you've given birth. It offers maternity tops and dresses in flowing styles that can help you keep your pregnancy a secret during the first few months before accentuating your body as time goes on. The company's bottoms include jeans, pants, skirts, and shorts--many of which feature the company's elastic Ok Waistband. Activewear, intimates, and swimwear are also all available in designs that are able to accommodate your growing baby bump. Once you've had the baby, the brand's nursing line includes tops, dresses, bras, and pajamas that make it easy to feed your little one.
If you aren't looking forward to restocking your wardrobe with nursing clothes right after giving birth, consider items in Japanese Weekend's signature During and After line. These styles are built to accommodate your baby bump while you're pregnant, but they can also function well as nursing tops and dresses once the baby is born. You'll love being able to ease the transition as your body grows and then shrinks again without needing to stock up on new clothes several times.
