Ocasio Cortez Unpopular

Ocasio Cortez Unpopular 3,8/5 905 votes

A recent poll revealed that crucial Democrat voters have a largely unfavorable opinion of the more radical figures in the party, including Reps. Ocasio-Cortez and Ilhan Omar.

It surveyed 1,003 “white, non-college voters” who are likely to participate in the general election.

The poll, which was obtained by Axios, showed that 74 percent of respondents were familiar with Ocasio-Cortez but only 22 percent had a favorable view of the New York Democrat. Omar fared even worse, with 53 percent of voters saying they were familiar with her. But only 9 percent viewed the Minnesota lawmaker favorably.

Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez has been blaming more centrist Democrats for the party’s failure to maintain its wide majority in the House of representatives. But not all the moderates are wilting in front of AOC’s star power. Axios reported that top Democrats are pointing to the poll’s results as a sign that following the policy line dictated by Ocasio-Cortez and her “squad” of liberal House freshmen – which includes Omar and Reps. Rashida Tlaib and Ayanna Presley – is a tactical mistake and could cost them the House and the presidency.

The freshman Democrats have floated aggressively progressive policy proposals such as Medicare for all and the Green New Deal.

Ocasio-Cortez’s enthusiasm for socialism, meanwhile, does not seem to be shared by swing voters. According to Axios, 69 percent of respondents had an unfavorable view of socialism. On the other hand, 56 percent of voters surveyed had a favorable view of capitalism.

According to a top Democrat who is involved in 2020 congressional races, advancing socialist ideas could end up costing Democrats swing districts in 2020.

“If all voters hear about is AOC, it could put the [House] majority at risk,” the source told Axios. “[S]he’s getting all the news and defining everyone else’s races. Socialism is toxic to these voters.”

It’s not the first poll showing lukewarm enthusiasm for Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez

In June, a Quinnipiac poll found that only 23 percent of Americans had a favorable view of Ocasio-Cortez. Polls from the Morning Consult, Fox News, and Gallup revealed a similar sentiment.

Even within the district that elected her less than a year ago, Ocasio-Cortez has had trouble earning the approval of voters. According to a poll of registered voters released in June by a political action committee that opposes Ocasio-Cortez in June, 21 percent of people in New York’s 14th Congressional District had a favorable view of Ocasio-Cortez compared to 51 percent who viewed her unfavorably.

With the 2020 election fast approaching, veteran Democrats have clashed with the upstart progressive faction headed by Ocasio-Cortez. In an interview with the New York Times last week, House Speaker Nancy Pelosi downplayed the influence Ocasio-Cortez and other progressives had within the party.

“All these people have their public whatever and their Twitter world,” Pelosi said. “But they didn’t have any following. They’re four people and that’s how many votes they got.”
